Showerhead Hot Water Heaters

The showerhead hot water heaters are attached to the shower's water supply piping and connected to a household's electrical supply source when central hot water is not available. Undersized wiring prevents this unit from being suitable in wet locations, the rotary switch is not waterproof and the installation instructions fail to recommend an electrical junction box, but instead recommend tape. Another hazard is the plastic enclosure, which poses an electrocution and fire hazard.

The recalled actuators can jam and prevent the dampers from closing. If dampers fail to close during a fire, serious injury or death can be suffered by building occupants because smoke, fire and fumes can spread through a building's ventilation system.

The water heater may have been fitted with incorrectly made flue gas baffles. These baffles may affect fuel combustion, resulting in excessive carbon monoxide emissions, which can cause serious injuries and death.

Salty sea spray can cause the electrical capacitor within these units to corrode, posing a possible fire hazard.

The controls have an electronic relay that may fail in a manner that will allow the burner to operate and by-pass the interlock with the flue damper. The interlock assures proper operation of the damper for removal of combustion gases. If the interlock fails, excess carbon monoxide emissions may occur.
