How to check pets
- Brand & recipe
- Exact formula, flavor, species and package size.
- Lot & best-by
- Codes on the bag, pouch, lid or base of the can.
- Medicine details
- For animal medicines: product, strength, lot and expiration date.
1. Save the original codes
Keep the package or photograph the lot and date before decanting food. A barcode identifies a product, but generally does not identify its production batch.
2. Match the recipe and lot
Check FDA’s animal recall list and the linked manufacturer notice. Compare the recipe, package size and all affected codes; a recall may cover only part of a brand’s range.
3. Follow the animal-specific instructions
Follow the recall notice for affected food and treats. Contact your veterinarian if an animal seems ill or if a notice concerns prescribed veterinary medicine.

Pets & animal health recall questions
Is the barcode the same as the lot number?
No. A UPC identifies the product, while a lot code identifies a production batch. Compare the lot code and date specified by the notice, not only the barcode.
What if I already threw out the pet food bag?
Check any photos, receipts and saved order information, then contact the manufacturer. Without the lot code, it may be harder to determine whether the food came from an affected batch.
Are veterinary medicines included?
FDA’s animal recall resources include animal drugs as well as feed. Follow the specific notice and involve your veterinarian when a prescribed medicine or your pet’s health is affected.
