How to check supplements

Exact formula
Brand, product name, ingredient strength and capsule, powder or liquid format.
Lot & expiration
Printed batch code and date from the original container.
Seller & label
Keep the packaging and purchase details, especially for online orders.

1. Start with the full product name

Use the complete label name and brand, including strength or flavor. Keep a photo of the ingredient panel alongside the lot code.

2. Read recalls and safety alerts

FDA publishes both recalls and warnings about supplements. An alert may address an ingredient or a product with hidden drugs rather than one manufacturing lot.

3. Use the official instructions

If the notice matches, follow its advice about stopping use, returning the product or reporting a problem. Ask a health professional about questions involving your health or other medicines.

Dietary supplements recall questions

Do supplement safety alerts count as recalls?

Not necessarily. An alert can warn about a product or ingredient without announcing a recall. We identify the notice type and link to the agency so you can see the exact action.

Does FDA approve supplements before sale?

FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they reach the market. Review FDA’s consumer information and discuss use with a health professional.

Which codes should I compare?

Compare the name, formula, strength, lot and expiration date specified in the notice. If the warning covers an entire product or ingredient, a different lot code may not exclude it.
