How to check beauty & hygiene

Product & variant
Full name, shade, fragrance or formula and container size.
Lot or batch
Printed or stamped code on the container, carton or label.
UPC & seller
Barcode and purchase information, if the notice calls for them.

1. Look beyond the front label

Read the full product name and check the base, back and outer carton for a batch code. The exact code location varies by product; notices may include label photographs.

2. Compare the affected variants

Match the size and variant as well as the lot code. Different products in the same brand’s range may be outside the recall.

3. Follow the return or disposal instructions

If your product matches, follow the company’s notice and keep the identifying details for any refund request or problem report.

Beauty & personal care recall questions

Where is the batch code on a cosmetic?

It may be on the base, back, tube seam or outer packaging. The official notice often shows the affected code and its location. Ask the manufacturer if you cannot identify it.

Does a recall affect every product from a brand?

Read the scope of the notice. Many cosmetic recalls name particular sizes, variants or lots; others are broader. A brand-name match alone does not establish that your item is affected.

Where should I look for a sunscreen recall?

Check FDA’s drug recall resources and our medicines topic as well as the general FDA recall list. Sunscreens are regulated as drugs in the United States.
