How to check vehicles

Vehicle
VIN plus the year, make and model.
Car seat or equipment
Manufacturer, model and production date from the label.
Tire
Brand, tire line, size and DOT tire identification number.

1. Find the identifying label

A vehicle’s 17-character VIN is usually visible through the lower windshield and on its registration. For equipment, photograph its label so you can compare it with a campaign.

2. Run the official check

Use NHTSA’s VIN lookup for unrepaired recalls on a specific vehicle. General year, make and model results do not establish whether your individual vehicle is affected.

3. Arrange the remedy

Follow the campaign’s interim instructions and contact the manufacturer or dealer about the repair. Recheck later when a recently announced recall is still adding affected VINs.

Vehicles & road safety recall questions

Does this website check my VIN?

No. Use the linked official NHTSA lookup for your individual vehicle. The notices indexed here help you discover campaigns and find the responsible agency.

Are child car seats covered here?

Yes. Road-use child car seats belong with NHTSA vehicle equipment. Strollers, carriers and most other nursery products are in our CPSC children and toys category.

Can I check by model instead of VIN?

A model search finds relevant campaigns, but it does not determine whether a particular vehicle still needs a repair. Use the official VIN tool and manufacturer assistance for that check.
